Our Vision Statement

NIRWA is an independent national network, which represents and advocates on behalf of immigrant and refugee women in Australia. On the basis of shared values and principles, the network aims to be a unified voice, raising these women's issues and needs in all sections of the community.

Our Mission Statement

NIRWA provides governments with information on the needs and concerns of ethnic women in Australia. NIRWA also provides advice and assistance to government and community agencies to make their programs and services more responsive to the needs of ethnic women.

Our Purpose

a) To act as an independent advocate for immigrant and refugee women at a national level, committed to the goals of achieving cultural, social, economic, educational and sexual equality for immigrant and refugee women

b) To work in conjunction with other relevant national organisations on issues of common concern

c) To facilitate the exchange of information, experience and skills to our membership

d) To support the establishment of immigrant and refugee women's groups and activities at the State/Territory level to provide the resources and information to develop the skills of immigrant and refugee women nationally to enable them to work effectively for change and the achievement of cultural, social and economic equality for all immigrant and refugee women

e) To consolidate and extend the organisation through all existing State and Territory networks to achieve the widest possible participation of immigrant and refugee women

f) To develop national responses to immigrant and refugee women's issues which reflect the special needs of immigrant and refugee women

g) To further develop and refine immigrant and refugee women's policy

h) To promote access and equity for immigrant and refugee women by fostering and facilitating the establishment and development of culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate services for immigrant and refugee women

i) To take action towards the elimination of sexism and racism and to work towards equality of opportunity in the workforce, the provision of quality childcare, the implementation of effective anti-discrimination legislation and any other areas that involve improving the quality of life for immigrant and refugee women

j) To promote cross-cultural understanding

k) To do all such other things as may be incidental to the attainment of the above purposes
