The 8 State/Territory Members of NIRWA

NIRWA has key members who work in the field of immigrant and refugee women in each of the States and Territories in Australia. These members are:

ACT - Multicultural Women's Advocacy Association (MWA)

A peak body for CALD women, with 29 affiliate member organisations and 35 individuals. The Multicultural Women's Advocacy Association is involved in advocacy and information exchange and cooperates with other community groups and government to address issues affecting CALD women.

NSW - Immigrant Women's Speakout Association of NSW (IWSA)

IWSA is a peak advocacy, information, referral and research body for NESB women. It provides direct services to domestic violence victims, those who are seeking employment and training, and supports newly arrived immigrant and refugee women from African communities, and Middle Eastern and Asian backgrounds.

NT - Multicultural Council of Northern Territory

The council represents the multicultural interests in the NT, including the interests of immigrant and refugee women. It provides advocacy, services and general assistance to multicultural groups.

QLD - Immigrant Women's Support Service

The Migrant Women's Emergency Support Service Inc, trading as Immigrant Women's Support Service (IWSS) is a feminist organisation committed to providing services that recognise and promote the rights of women of non-English speaking backgrounds (NESB) and their children in Queensland.

The Crisis Support Workers from the Domestic Violence Service and the Counsellor/Advocates from the Sexual Assault Service provide information, referral, crisis support, counselling, advocacy, court support and practical and emotional support to women of NESB and their children affected by domestic and/or sexual violence.

IWSS staff also undertake community education activities on issues relating to domestic and sexual violence with communities from NESB. IWSS also produces resources such as fact sheets and brochures in English and various community languages to assist both service providers and NESB communities.

SA - Migrant Women's Lobby Group

A peak women's body which canvasses the interests, issues and concerns of migrant and refugee women in SA. It has been advocating and addressing issues of domestic violence, access to information, women in the workforce, unemployment, health, child care and the legal system, and works in collaboration with government, community and ethnic organisations.

TAS - Multicultural Women's Council of Tasmania

An independent body representing and supporting CALD women, advocating for them to both government and the community. The Multicultural Women's Council of Tasmania has 25 individual members.

VIC - Victorian Immigrant and Refugee Women's Coalition (VIRWC)

VIRWC is the peak body representing migrant and refugee women's organisations across Victoria. The coalition provides representation, capacity building support, and advice, for a range of organisations whose priority is the development and support of immigrant and refugee women. The nature of its membership ranges from small, informal grassroots based social groups to large, co-ordinated service providers.

WA - Ethnic Communities Council of WA Women's Committee

The Women's Subcommittee ensures that the voices of migrant women are heard, provides leadership and role models, identifies barriers for Non-English Speaking background (NESB) women, monitors government policies to ensure they reflect women's needs and creates opportunities for networking and developing strategic partnerships for women.
